DWT: Enhanced Quotation

I had so much fun doing Project 5 of Designing with Type, i couldn’t stop exercising and had to assign me some more homework (definitely the first time i am saying something like that about homework).

Project 6 asked me to select a favorite quotation, song or poem and find a way to express the sentiment typographically. Alrighty! Please make sure that you click the image to view it at full size.

DWT: Expressive Words

The book’s 5th project in Designing with Type is to explore the expressive quality of words through typography: “Select five words and explore their expressive quality by manipulating the letter forms. To achieve the desired effect, avoid simply repeating the words or creating an illustration from the letter forms. This exercise requires manipulating typefaces, styles, sizes, and positions.”

After i saw two “contestants” reveal their works at John’s blog iLoveTypography, and since i was curious in what i could come up with, i sat down and just took the words from Karly, one of the typenuts who shared their results with John. Though i don’t really know where manipulating ends and where illustrating starts, here is my go:

Karly used Garamond, Baskerville, Century and Helvetica, but i decided to use only Garamond and Helvetica, because i can’t stand Baskerville and Century, but that is another story i guess.

I am unfuckingbelievable curious what “the judges” have to say now. People know me as hard critic, so don’t be friendly, please! ;)

The future: Logotypes in the 70’s

This site is brand new, grab the feed and see how it develops.

You probably know the 3 logotype books “Los, Dos & Tres Logos”. These are todays bibles of logotype design and my biggest source of inspiration. The thing with these books is that they feature a lot of these so called web 2.0 designs. Stuff that looks great when viewed on a 16.8 million colors screen, but not so great when converted to b/w for stationaries.

Los Logos - Example

But today i came across “World of Logotype, The trademark ecyclopedia”. Just like “Los Logos”, it has two sequels (part II. & III.), but what makes it so different from todays logotype books, is that they were printed just plain b/w. One color logos, that is the the truest form of logotype design. No color or shiny gradients attached, just the shape – no lip gloss.

World of Logotypes

First thing was to ebay for the books as they are no longer in print, but that was no success. Amazon sports some old used issues of them, but especially part I. is utterly expensive. But fear not, Eric Carl, who scanned the first book in its entirety, offers a .zip for your viewing pleasure. Maybe it is time to connect that unused laser printer again and feed it with 120 sheets of paper.

I made a mirror of the scans, to take off some load from Eric’s server, but make sure you drop by at Eric’s blog and give him a fat kiss for his efforts.

Download as Zip archive (25.2 MB)
Download as single PDF file (33.3 MB)

Update: Eric just reported that he only scanned half of the book (i don’t want to sound ungrateful though, but i want to see more). So if anybody want to sell his hard- or softcover copies, please contact me, i’ll get it scanned.
